Skimming is the act of obtaining unauthorized information from another person’s credit card or cash card and using a counterfeit card made from that information to illegally withdraw cash.
Skimming uses a special device called a skimmer to read the information written on the magnetic stripe of a credit card.
One effective measure to prevent skimming is to switch to IC-type cards. IC-type cards are more secure than previous cards, as they always require a PIN set to make a payment.
In addition, information is stored on the card’s built-in IC chip rather than on the magnetic stripe, preventing instantaneous skimming as before.
