ICANN stands for Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the name of a private, non-profit organization headquartered in the United States.
It is an international organization that manages domain names, IP addresses, and protocols used on the internet, and is known as the only organization with jurisdiction over top domains in particular.
However, with the release of Namecoin, an altcoin with DNS functionality, a P2P (peer-to-peer) top domain “.bit” was born without a centralized administrative authority. Thus, a completely free network was created that was not controlled by ICANN.
