Authorization is the process of asking the credit card company if the card is indeed valid when it is used.
The purpose of authorization is to prevent fraudulent use and to confirm the limit. This is done through a telephone or Internet connection from the store’s credit card payment terminal or other device. Once the authorization code is received from the credit card company upon approval is verified, the store can accept the payment with the credit card.
Conversely, if the authorization cannot be cleared and sales approval obtained, the customer cannot make a credit card transaction. In most cases, authorization is done automatically by machine, but in some cases it is done manually.
