The security code is the last three digits of the seven digit number printed on the signature line on the back of a credit card. The role of the security code is to increase security by preventing unauthorized use or identity theft by third parties.
You may be asked to enter a security code when shopping on the internet. The security code is a means of proving that the card is in your possession and is entered in addition to the card number and expiration date to verify your identity.
The security code is never printed on the card usage slip. Since the security code is not magnetic information in the credit card, there is no risk of it being read by a card reader. It is a number that is known only to the cardholder.
