When a customer uses a credit card, the store has to pay a merchant fee to the credit card company, which may require the customer to cover the cost.
In other countries, such as Australia and the United Kingdom, surcharges may be required as a matter of course, but rarely are surcharges required in Japan.
This is because the merchant’s terms and conditions usually do not allow for a difference between cash payment and credit card use.
